Celebrating Excellence in Education: The F.A.I.R. Foundation Teacher Award

World Teachers’ Day, on October 5, 2024, is a perfect time to express our gratitude for educators who make a lasting impact on students’ lives. The F.A.I.R. Foundation, a component of the Greene County Community Foundation (Greene Giving), takes pride in recognizing outstanding educators each year through its annual teacher award. This award, established by Joy Anna and Barry James, celebrates teachers who go above and beyond in their dedication to education.

The original award began as a $500 prize, but after witnessing the remarkable contributions of teachers, the amount was raised to $1,000. This increase reflects the growing appreciation for teachers who positively influence their classrooms and communities.

This year, the F.A.I.R. Foundation honored Rebecca “Becki” Covey, a long-time educator at the Greene County Career Center. Becki’s career spans over 30 years, beginning in the 1993-94 school year. During her time at the Career Center, she has held many roles, from teaching Advanced American Literature and Business Writing to leading co-curricular activities like the Yearbook Class. Becki has also played a significant role in various initiatives, such as Applied Communications and the Construction Cluster Team for the School to Work Apprenticeship Program.

As Chair of the English Department, Becki has guided her team through the challenges of an ever-changing educational landscape, including the pandemic. Her work to integrate academic lessons with career technical labs has helped bridge multiple disciplines, making learning more cohesive for students. Her support for both students and colleagues has made her a staple in the Career Center community.

Superintendent David Deskins of the Greene County Career Center spoke highly of Becki’s dedication and leadership, praising her for her efforts in developing the College Credit Plus (CCP) pathway, which allows high school students to earn college credits. Thanks to Becki’s commitment, hundreds of students have been able to advance their education and career opportunities while still in high school.

Generosity Through Scholarships

Statistics show that more than 60% of college students rely on scholarships, and about 15% of those receive private scholarships. Someone calculated that 1.8 million private scholarships are awarded annually in the U.S. Establishing a scholarship is a great way to extend generosity and pay it forward.
