Twenty-five years ago, a vision came to life in Greene County. One built on generosity, community, and the belief that people, when brought together, can create lasting change.
In our 20th anniversary blog, founding member Fred Gibson described a foundation as “something that you build a quality of life on… something that binds people together.” That vision became the foundation of what Greene Giving is today.
Now, as Greene Giving celebrates its 25th anniversary, we reflect not only on where it began, but how far it has come, and where it’s headed next.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
For Jeff Brock, President of Greene Giving, this milestone is both personal and powerful.
“It is a privilege to celebrate this milestone with Greene Giving,” he shared. “I witnessed the forming of Greene Giving in 2001 and was well acquainted with our founders. Milestones like this are really good opportunities to review accomplishments, recommit to a mission, but also recalibrate that mission and the opportunities now afforded to us 25 years later.”
That sense of reflection, and forward momentum, defines this moment for the organization.
From Vision to Impact
When Greene Giving was founded by Fred Gibson alongside Herman Menapace, John Saraga, and Reed Madden, the goal was simple: bring people together to improve the community.
What followed exceeded even their expectations.
“I am sure the four founders believed that Greene Giving would make a difference in Greene County,” Jeff said, “but I am also sure they would be astounded to think that Greene Giving has granted almost $40 million in these 25 years.”
- Over the past 25 years, Greene Giving has:
- Granted $39.6 million in scholarships and funding
- Established more than 500 funds
- Supported over 2,500 nonprofits
These numbers tell a powerful story, but behind each one is something even more meaningful.

The Power of Generosity in Action
At its core, Greene Giving has remained true to its original purpose.
“Simply encouraging generosity and philanthropy,” Jeff explained. “Literally thousands have connected to Greene Giving and become part of the Greene Giving family.”
That generosity has touched nearly every corner of Greene County. From education and scholarships to parks, healthcare, and senior services, Greene Giving has helped bring projects and ideas to life, large and small.
And while major milestones matter, Jeff emphasizes that sometimes the smallest moments carry the greatest impact:
“I think the most meaningful are those that seem small by dollar amount, but hold so much meaning in the gesture… providing a shirt for a cancer patient that makes their treatment more comfortable, food provided through a food pantry that was ‘just in time,’ or material provided for a classroom that made learning come to life.”
“Every dollar we distribute leaves an impression, some deeper than others.”
Evolving to Meet the Moment
As Greene County has changed, so has Greene Giving.
“I think our role evolves only as needs and challenges arise,” Jeff shared. “We always represent philanthropy and generosity as a partial or full answer to an opportunity.”
Today, that means addressing emerging challenges like homelessness and housing affordability, while continuing to invest in the core areas that have shaped the foundation’s work for decades.
“We already helped hold a summit of interested parties across Greene County and now host a roundtable in collaboration with several other organizations to consider how best to address this in Greene County,” Jeff stated. “However, if we are going to help maintain and improve quality of life, we will always focus on our program anchors–education, parks and recreation, senior services and healthcare.”
Through it all, Greene Giving remains committed to improving quality of life across the county.
Looking Ahead: The Next 25 Years
If the first 25 years were about building a foundation, the next 25 are about expanding its reach and deepening its impact.
“We want to be considered foremost by Greene County residents who want to generously improve their county and organizations close to home or in their backyard,” Jeff said. “We want to help them leave a legacy and a deep impression, and find ways for their philanthropy to make the change they envision.”
That vision includes:
- Empowering donors to give more intentionally
- Helping nonprofits grow and serve more people
- Expanding scholarship opportunities for students
- Strengthening partnerships across the community
“We are enhancing our services right now to do all of this, hopefully bolstering the confidence of all with whom we partner in our ability to bring generosity to life across Greene County.”
“This will help assure a more thriving 25 more years for Greene Giving.”
Be Part of What Comes Next
At its heart, Greene Giving has always been about people. Neighbors helping neighbors, families giving back, and a community choosing to invest in itself.
“If one or their family appreciates the quality of life they have experienced in Greene County and wants to generously pay it forward, Greene Giving knows best how to help them,” Jeff shared.
“They want to make a deep impression on their local schools, an organization that has served them or their family well, name a scholarship in their or a family member’s name, or follow through on a passion for things like nature or conservation, or compassion for those in need or underserved…right here at home.”
As we celebrate this 25-year milestone, one thing is clear: the story of Greene Giving is still being written, and there’s room for everyone to be part of it.
