For Steve Black, philanthropy isn’t just about making donations, it’s about stewardship, values, and carrying forward a legacy of generosity.
Steve and his family view giving as an expression of responsibility for the resources, relationships, and opportunities they’ve been entrusted with. That perspective didn’t appear overnight. It was shaped by the example set by parents and grandparents whose generosity left a lasting impression.
“Philanthropy, to us, is an expression of stewardship,” Steve shares. “We believe God has entrusted us with resources, relationships, and opportunities, and we are called to use His good gifts wisely and generously.” Over time, that mindset has evolved from simply responding to needs as they arise to making more intentional investments in people, organizations, and long term impact.
Giving with Purpose
Establishing a donor-advised fund has helped the Black family bring even more thoughtfulness to their giving. Rather than making one-off donations, the fund provides a structure that allows them to be strategic and aligned with their values.
“Giving through a foundation allows us to be more intentional, strategic, and generous about where and how we give,” Steve explains. “It creates space to reflect, pray, and align our resources with both community needs and the purpose God has placed on our hearts.” It also offers an opportunity to pass those values on to the next generation. The fund serves as a practical tool for teaching their children about generosity and stewardship, continuing the example that was set for them.
One of the things Steve appreciates most about giving through a donor-advised fund is the balance it provides. It simplifies the logistics of giving while keeping the focus on what matters most. “A donor-advised fund combines flexibility with clarity and discipline,” he says. “It transforms giving from a series of transactions into intentional, values-based stewardship.”
Investing in the Local Community
While the Black family supports causes that align with their broader vision, giving locally remains a priority. Being close to the organizations they support allows them to better understand community needs and see the impact of their gifts firsthand.
“Proximity creates connection and accountability,” Steve explains. “Our hope is that our stewardship strengthens organizations, develops leaders, and contributes to healthier, more resilient communities over time.”
A Message to the Next Generation of Donors
As younger donors, Steve and his family see their role in philanthropy not as a matter of how much they give, but how faithfully they give.
“We view our foundation as a way to carry forward a family legacy of generosity and, God willing, pass those values on to our children,” he says.
For those who may not yet see themselves as philanthropists, Steve offers simple encouragement: philanthropy begins the moment someone chooses to steward their time, talent, and resources for the good of others.
