The Scholarship Process with Greene Giving
Many donors choose to create a scholarship for students as an enduring legacy. Donors enjoy many options to define the criteria, and if they choose, remain involved in the process.
The Greene County Community Foundation (Greene Giving) administers scholarship for businesses, components, donors, charitable organizations, civic and service groups. Most scholarships start with a contribution being added to by donors or others at any time. The contribution and subsequent donations are invested by the Community Foundation, and the earnings are utilized during each year for scholarship according to the criteria established by the donors.
Scholarships can bear the name chosen by the donors or others, and the recipient always is informed of the source for the scholarship. Often a scholarship is established as a memorial for an individual whose interests are perpetuated by the annual distribution. One example is Kevin Sonnycalb who passed in 2011.
The Kevin Sonnycalb Scholarship
Kevin was a 1971 graduate of Xenia High School and a Wright State University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy in 1975. Kevin Sonnycalb joined the accounting firm of Mesarvey, Russell and Company, City of Springfield, in 1976, which later became a part of CBIZ, City of Fairborn. He was a member and past president of the Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Torrance Award in 2005. Kevin Sonnycalb also was past president of the then Xenia Educational Endowment Fund.
The Kevin Sonnycalb Scholarship was started with a contribution by his wife, Susan Sonnycalb, two daughters – Meredith and Abigail plus the grandchildren, with amounts added over time. Scholarship at the Greene County Community Foundation is ideal for donors wanting administrative details handled by the Special Committee on Public Education to protect value into the future.
2020 Scholarship Recipient: Nate Saner
Nate Saner, the 2020 recipient, shared with us what receiving this scholarship means for him and his college career:
“Having such a generous scholarship has allowed me to focus on getting situated with the college repertoire and not stress about working full time on top of coursework.”
Jim Saner, father of Nate Saner, wrote “Not sure what to say except for – WOW – and thank you. Nate was feeling very fortunate and thankful with the James McHarg Scholarship…from the Greene County Community Foundation, receiving the Kevin Sonnycalb Scholarship becomes the cherry on top. The additional amount definitely will help out as Nate begins the next phase of his education at Wright State University.”
