Scholarship Spotlight: Linton Scholarship

At Greene Giving, we know what can change a community for the better is the opportunities presented to the next generation. This is why we will periodically spotlight various scholarships that we help manage through Greene Giving for the benefit of Greene County’s students and future.

The Story of the Linton Scholarship

Norman “Doc” Linton was born in Paintersville, Ohio and grew up on a small farm. Doc Linton always felt blessed to be surrounded by the love of his parents and his two older brothers, Walter, and Roy.

Doc Linton graduated from Bowersville High School (Greeneview High School) in 1938. He then attended Cedarville University and The Ohio State University before entering medical school in Louisville.

During his internship at Miami Valley Hospital, he met and later married a nursing student, Jane Compton. Shortly thereafter, Doc Linton entered the United States Army, and he ended up spending their first two wedding anniversaries in the Philippines, caring for the ill and wounded.

He was finally able to come back to his home town in 1948 to join the practice of the doctor who assisted his birth, R.L. Haines. He worked long hours making house calls, conducting afternoon and evening office hours, delivering babies, performing minor surgery and setting fractures.

Leaving a Legacy by Investing In Your Community

When asked by a reporter from the Springfield News- Sun, “what makes a good doctor,” Doc Linton replied, “You have to be genuinely interested in people. You become a part of the community and to some extent, a part of the families you serve. You have to have a real understanding of people’s problems, you have to listen to what people tell you and you have to like people.”

He genuinely loved the Village of Jamestown, and the people of nearby Bowersville and Paintersville.

Doc Linton lived by the motto on his grave marker, “To Treat Many, To Cure Some, To Comfort All.” Norman Linton passed in 2017 after a full ninety-seven years.

Choosing to Partner with Greene Giving

Doc created the Linton Scholarship during his lifetime in partnership with Greene Giving. A portion of the original asset still resides on a platform for the Greene County Community Foundation, shares of then National City Bank, now PNC Bank.
Contributions can still be made in his memory by sending a check to the Greene County Community Foundation (Greene Giving) with Linton Scholarship in the memo corner. You can donate either via the form on our website or in person.

Words from 2018 Recipient, Brooke Hentrich:

We contacted Brooke Hentrich, the 2018 scholarship recipient, to ask her how receiving the scholarship has influenced her. Brooke is currently at Sinclair Community College studying nursing. Receiving the Linton Scholarship has given her the ability to attend school debt free up to this point.

If Brooke had the opportunity to speak to Doc Linton directly, she said she would share this: “I would just say thank you so much for everything you have done in your life. You are still able to help so many people, and I know we are all very thankful for the legacy you have left behind.”

Generosity Through Scholarships

Statistics show that more than 60% of college students rely on scholarships, and about 15% of those receive private scholarships. Someone calculated that 1.8 million private scholarships are awarded annually in the U.S. Establishing a scholarship is a great way to extend generosity and pay it forward.
